Board Member Describes Challenges in Securing Affordable Housing

Public Health Liberation Board Member Darrell Davis recently became Charleston County’s new director of Community Revitalization and Housing Affordability. In an article in the Post and Courier, he describes his personal challenges with securing affordable housing, even as a housing executive. “After my first interview I started looking around different parts of the county,” Davis said. “I knew my family wouldn’t be coming immediately so I started looking for a one-bedroom apartment in the $1,000 range,” said Mr. Davis. The article continues, ‘Davis’ personal experience with housing prices in the Charleston area has not ended. His one-bedroom apartment in Summerville is temporary because his wife and the youngest two of his five children will be joining him. So the hunt for his own affordable home continues.” Mr. Davis’ experiences highlight not only the affordable housing crisis, but also how affordability takes shape as a social determinant of health.
