Public Health Roles of Resident Leaders

Early Release: Table of Public Health Roles and Functions of Resident Leaders in Public Health

Members of Public Health Liberation have developed a preliminary table of public health roles and functions of resident leaders in low-income housing communities. The group began meeting in December 2023 and held their last meeting in February 2024. A forthcoming manuscript will discuss the experiences of seven resident leaders - five from elected public housing resident councils, one as tenant association president of a low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) property, and a longstanding resident advocate in public housing.

The table below covers public health (PH) experiences across four domains - interpersonal/household, community, external relations, and PH roles beyond leadership role. They outline experiences within the last five years. The scope of their public health practice draws attention to the importance of resident leaders as a critical frontline public health workforce. This project evolved from an initiative of Kyra, a PHL intern, who was interested in women leadership and intersections with health. A manuscript is underway to address major gaps in the public health literature on the public health roles of resident leaders. This preliminary table is not for public distribution at this time.
